Spring turkey hunting is an exciting way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family
By Rich Wissink

Rich Wissink, PF national youth program specialist, at right, and son Corey, center, celebrate a successful turkey hunt with friend Griz.
During a youth mentored turkey hunt, Corey and his two mentors “Griz” and Rich were scouting for turkeys the evening before the hunt. Stopping periodically to imitate the call of the barred owl . . . “who cooks for you, who cooks for you all” . . . a lone tom was eventually “shocked” into a thunderous gobble from atop a mature oak ridge.
“Thunder struck,” Corey said, his grin lighting up the sky. They all knew where they were going to start the hunt in the morning.
Back at turkey camp, other hunters and their mentors were returning from their own scouting missions. A dinner of venison burgers, roasted vegetables and a secret camp recipe for beans was served around a large campfire. It was the perfect setting for sharing scouting reports and strategies for the next day.
