Justin “Jay” Wilsey

Montrose, IA

Tell us about your family:

My family split when I was eight, and my dad lives close by. I do a lot of hunting and fishing with both sides of my family. I have one uncle on my mom’s side and an aunt and uncle on my dad’s side.

What activities are you involved in at school and in your community?

In school, I am involved in football, basketball, track and baseball.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to go hunting, fishing, and hang out with friends.

Why do you want to serve on the Youth Leadership Council? Why will you be a good spokesperson for your age group on conservation?

I wanted to be on the NYLC, because I think it would be a good experience. I like to help out kids at local fishing tournaments and hunters education. I think I was a good spokesperson for my age group, because I think that kids will listen to people their own age more than they will some adults. I also think that getting kids outdoors is the most important factor for the future of hunting and conservation. Without youth getting outdoors conservation and hunting will be a thing of the past.

Cassie Schlender

North Freedom, WI

Tell us about your family:

I have a younger and older sister.  We live on a farm and I have a dog of my own that I enjoy to work with.  We hunt on our land and also enjoy fishing and family time up north at our cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

What activities are you involved in at school and in your community?

Student Council, softball, cross country. I play softball, fish, run, farm work, swim, hunt, Pheasants Forever, and get involved in volunteer work.

Why do you want to serve on the Youth Leadership Council? Why will you be a good spokesperson for your age group on conservation?

I believe I can be a good spokesperson and I enjoy the outdoors and I think young adults like me can easily connect with the kids and they can be more  promoted to get outdoors through this.  If younger people are excited in it, they are more likely to actually take an interest in something that seems fun. I really enjoy being outdoors and seeing wildlife, along with hunting, fishing, and hiking and can show other young kids how this can be fun for a lifetime.

Any awards or special honors you have received?

Presidential fitness award for three years. Honor roll  award. Cross country metals for varsity running. 2 “letters” in varsity cross country. Also spirit, hustle, and MVP for 2 years in softball.  I’ve been very athletic all my life and love to use the outdoors in training for it to be more enjoyable.

What else are you proud of that you have done or want to do?

I’ve been a part of the NYLC and that’s something to be very prooud of.  I also am the high school varsity softball pitcher and varsity cross country runner.  I want to go to college for Elementary Education because I love working with kids. I also get to hunt every winter and my goal is always to get a big buck and hunt as much as possible:)
